The Voices ( in our Heads)

“This should work shouldn’t it?”

“How the hell should I know?  This is the first time either of us have tried this combination but if it doesn’t work this time I am completely out of ideas.”

“Thomas Edi…”

“I don’t give a damn about Thomas Edison and his thousand tries at a light bulb.  We have nearly spent our entire inheritance on this project and we still aren’t even sure it will work.”

“Of course it will work.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because it’s already working, I haven’t been speaking to you at all.  Look at me.  I am not moving my lips and still you know exactly what I am thinking.  Before I pointed out to you that I wasn’t talking you hadn’t even been able to tell the difference.”

“Holy crap.”

“No don’t talk, think.”

“I can’t believe this is happening.  I mean I knew that by energizing the nano-chip and tuning it to a parallel frequency we should be able communicate like this but that was a theory, this is something else."

"I know its great right?  We have finally become real twins.  Remember when we were kids and we read that story about the two twins who always knew what the other one was thinking and how we spend the next few weeks trying to perfect their method of communication."

"Yeah, its strange when you think about it.  For awhile I was convinced that you were an impostor or that we were in some way defective."

"It's funny the things kids think."

"Now that we fixed our 'defect' I think we should test this thing out."

"What kind of range do you think we have?”

“I don't know for sure but theoretically we are limited to a around a dozen feet after that we would need an alternate power source.”

"Is there anything we can do to expand the range?  If not then this thing might turn into a glorified party trick."

“So what happens if we get beyond that range?”

“Nothing, we just go back to normal and then when we are back in range we communicate like this again.  It’s not really telepathy you know; it’s more like wifi thinking.”

“I am going to test the range.  Hey can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“How about now?”

“Yeah”

“And now?”

“Still can.”

“That’s weird we should be out of range, you have got to be at least thirty feet away by now”

“Let me take a look at the transmission module.  Hmm...This doesn't really make sense.  Come over here a second and take a look.”

“I don't get it. The read out seems to show the same level of connectivity since we first logged in.  How is that possible?”

“Not sure but maybe if we reset it the meter will give us a more accurate reading.  I am going to unplug the router and reset the computer.  We might lose a few seconds of da…..”

“That’s weird I can’t hear your sent thoughts and apparently you can’t hear mine either."

“That really doesn't make sense turning the computer and router off shouldn't affect the connection since it is internal to the n-plant.”

“Wait, what if we aren't connected directly?  That might explain why the levels didn't drop as we went further away from each other.  If we are connected via the WiFi then we wouldn't have any real limit to our range.  It should back up in a second.  Go over to school and jump on their WiFi I stay here and we will give it a try.”

“Hey can you hear me now?”

“This is freaking great.  I got you loud and clear.”

“Who is this?  What is going on?  I don’t understand?  How can I hear you?  It’s like the sound….

“Hello?”

“What the …”

“Jim, we have to shut this down now.  I can hear every one…”

“Who’s Jim?  Who are you?”

“It’s so loud.  Turn it off.”

“Jim?”

“It’s too late..."
"What..."

So this book is a little off theme but I feel compelled to stick it up here anyway.

Ok now in spirit of this blog on fiction I will make some recomendations about fiction.  I have been spending a bit of time lately working on a scifi work, a novel actually and through the process I have read a number of good websites about fiction writing.

Scalzi's is one of the best and I have heard really good things from Tim about his book on writing, speaking of "On Writing" SK's book by that name is wortha look as well.  To fair to the readership of this blog I will also post in a seperate post an unedited freeform writing of fiction that I recently worte.  I am interested to hear what y'all think of it.  (threw in a little of the south there for ya)
